Why Study in University of Manchester?

The University of Manchester, situated in Manchester, England, is a public research institution with its main campus located south of Manchester City Centre along Oxford Road. The university is renowned for its ownership and operation of significant cultural assets, including the Manchester Museum, The Whitworth art gallery, the John Rylands Library, the Tabley House Collection, and the Jodrell Bank Observatory—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recognized as a red brick university, it emerged as a result of the civic university movement in the late 19th century. The present University of Manchester was established in 2004 through the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester, concluding a century of close collaboration between the two institutions.

The roots of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology can be traced back to the Mechanics' Institute, founded in 1824. The university officially considers this date, also the founding year of the Royal School of Medicine and Surgery (a predecessor institution of the Victoria University of Manchester), as its official foundation year, reflected in its crest and logo. The institute, originating from the belief that various professions relied on scientific principles, aimed to teach individuals in the workforce branches of science relevant to their occupations. The founders envisioned that the practical application of science would stimulate innovation and progress within these trades and professions. Meanwhile, the Victoria University of Manchester, initially established as Owens College in 1851, contributed significantly to academic research, with publications disseminated through the Manchester University Press starting in 1904.

As the third-largest university in the United Kingdom in terms of total enrollment, the University of Manchester attracts over 92,000 undergraduate applications annually, making it the most sought-after university in the country in terms of application volume. A member of prestigious groups like the Russell Group, the N8 Group, and the US-based Universities Research Association, the University of Manchester, including its precursor institutions, has produced 25 Nobel laureates among its past and present students and staff—a distinction ranking it fourth among UK universities in terms of Nobel laureates.
