The University of London (UoL), often abbreviated as Lond or occasionally Londin in post-nominals, is a federal public research university situated in London, England, United Kingdom. Initially established in 1836 through a royal charter as a degree-awarding examination board for students holding certificates from institutions like University College London and King's College London, it later adopted a federal structure with constituent colleges in 1900. Governed by the University of London Act 2018 and incorporated by its fourth royal charter in 1863, the university comprises 17 member institutions and three central academic bodies.
With approximately 48,000 distance learning external students and around 219,410 campus-based internal students, the University of London stands as the largest university in the United Kingdom by student enrollment. Member institutions, operating independently for most practical purposes, now have the right, under the 2018 Act, to seek university status without leaving the federal university.
