The University of Glasgow, established in 1451, is the fourth-oldest English-speaking university globally and one of Scotland's ancient universities. It played a key role in the Scottish Enlightenment. With over 19,500 postgraduates, it's the largest university in Scotland and the second-largest in the UK by postgraduate enrollment. Originally for the wealthy, it pioneered inclusivity in 19th-century British higher education. The university, with the fifth-largest endowment in the UK, had an annual income of £944.2 million in 2022–23. It's part of Universitas 21, the Russell Group, and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The main campus moved to Gilmorehill in 1870, and notable alumni include signatories of the US Declaration of Independence, UK Prime Ministers, Scottish First Ministers, economists, philosophers, engineers, Nobel Prize laureates, and Olympic gold medallists, including the current chancellor, Dame Katherine Granger.
