Established in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is a public research university located in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is one of Scotland's ancient universities, formed by the merger of King's College and Marischal College in 1860. The university has campuses in Old Aberdeen and Foresterhill, the latter hosting one of Europe's largest health campuses.
Historically, there was a studium generate in Old Aberdeen from 1157. King's College, founded formally in 1494, aimed to address the educational gaps in northern Scotland. Following the Scottish Reformation in 1560, it underwent changes, and a second university, Marischal College, emerged in 1593.
The rivalry between King's and Marischal Colleges led to attempted mergers in the 17th century. Despite clashes and intellectual contributions to the Scottish Enlightenment, both colleges faced purges after supporting the Jacobite rebellion in 1715.
