The University for the Creative Arts, located in the southern part of England, is a specialized university focusing on art and design.
Established in 2005 as the University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, and Rochester, it emerged from the merger of the Kent Institute of Art and Design with the Surrey Institute of Art & Design. The latter already held degree-awarding status. Both constituent schools had been created by amalgamating local art schools in Kent and Surrey, respectively. The university attained full university status in 2008, leading to its current name.
The history of the University for the Creative Arts traces back to the nineteenth century when small art schools were founded in the English counties of Kent and Surrey. The Maidstone College of Art, established in 1867, and the Guildford School of Art, founded in 1856, were among the earliest. Over time, these small art schools merged, eventually forming the Kent Institute of Art & Design in 1987 and the Surrey Institute of Art & Design in 1995. The union of these two organizations in 2005 resulted in the creation of the University College for the Creative Arts at various locations. In 2008, it achieved university status and officially adopted its current name.
