Its origins can be traced back to the establishment of the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts in 1823, which later amalgamated to form Liverpool Polytechnic. In 1992, through an Act of Parliament, Liverpool Polytechnic underwent a transformation, becoming the institution we now know as Liverpool John Moores University. The university is dedicated to Sir John Moores, a local philanthropist and business figure, whose contributions benefited the precursor institutions.

In the academic year 2019/20, LJMU boasted a student body of 25,050, comprising 20,105 undergraduates and 4,945 postgraduates, earning it the rank of the 30th largest university in the UK based on total student population.
