Leeds Beckett University (LBU), previously known as Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU) and earlier as Leeds Polytechnic, stands as a public university in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The university boasts campuses in both the city centre and Headingley. Its roots date back to 1824 when the Leeds Mechanics Institute was established. Leeds Polytechnic came into existence in 1970 and was initially part of the Leeds Local Education Authority until it gained independence as a Higher Education Corporation on April 1, 1989. The institution achieved university status in 1992 and adopted its current name in September 2014.
In the fiscal year 2016–17, the university reported an annual income of £221.4 million, with £3.4 million derived from grants and contracts. Expenditure for the same period amounted to £217.1 million.
